Here are 7 basic search engine optimization tips for those beginners out there who do not know how search engines work or how to optimize their site for the search engines. These tips will not rank you first for every keyword you are trying to rank for of course, but it will help.
Anyway, how do the search engines do it? Well, they send out software programs to your site called spiders, crawl it, and check how relevant your site is to certain keywords. They check the age of your site, quality of your links and content, and much more. Now that you get the basic idea of how the search engine spiders work, let's get started.
1. Search engine spiders can not see flash all too well
The search engine spiders have limitations. They can not read flash that great, like videos for instance. Although, Google is constantly changing and they now can index textual parts in flash.
3. Search engines read text better
Search engines read text the best but it's also good to use images. Be sure to use the alt attribute for images. You can also use the title attribute for links. This will not really help too much, if at all, in search engine optimization, but it's better for your users.
4. Build good content
Build good content related to your keywords. This is important in ranking in the SERPS. (Search Engine Result Pages). Try to build highly linkable content. What do I mean by highly linkable content? I mean when you write content so good, it makes other people want to link to you on their site. Also known as off page optimization. The more links you have leading to your site, the better you will rank in the SERPS.
5. Update update update
I can not reiterate this enough. Updating is very important to the success of your site. Search engines like fresh new content. Also, if you are trying to run a successful blog, updating is very important. If you want to get readers for your site and keep them there, you need to update. There's nothing more annoying about a blog, then finding one you really like, coming back, and not having a new post. If you have a blog, try to make a post daily to keep your readers from leaving your site and staying and subscribing.
6. Using keywords
Using keywords correctly is very important. Use them in your content and links associated with your site. Use keywords in your title, content, et cetera. If you're trying to maintain a blog and rank it, use keywords in the title of your posts and in the content of your post. Do not spam your content with your keywords though, it looks unprofessional and spammy.
7. Be careful with your keywords
Be careful with your keywords. When you use too many keywords on the same page, it will dilute the relevance to each keyword listed so try to use one keyword per page.
That's about it! Follow these simple tips and it should help your rank in the SERPS.
